I like to think of myself as someone who eats relatively healthy.

I eat mostly organic, whole foods and try to eat at home as much as possible. I’ve come a long way since my restrictive days and I really don’t limit myself anymore. I actually find that I’m eating healthier with this mindset shift because I’m much more in touch with my body.

Don’t get me wrong. I still eat pizza, movie theater popcorn and all of that good stuff. It just doesn’t make up my entire diet.

(Before I go any further, I want to really stress an important point: your worth is not attached to what you eat. You can eat green smoothies, superfoods or a raw vegan diet and still be deserving of love. You can eat donuts for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and still be EQUALLY as deserving of love as the other person. Got it? Good. Let’s continue.)

While I’m no longer restricting what I eat at all, I do notice that I have two behaviors that I’m really wanting to work with. I want to work with them because I love myself – and again, my worth as a person doesn’t change based on whether I engage with them, or not.

Those habits are the amount of chocolate I eat and the fact that I’m willing to drive sixty minutes in the middle of a day to get a chai latte.

I think the chocolate one is pretty self-explanatory because, well… Chocolate is #life

When it comes to the chai latte habit, it gets to a whole new level. It’s been quite life-controlling.

I <3 chai lattes

I work from home which gives me a certain amount of flexibility with my day. Yah, I’m very lucky. So when things get busy or I want to mentally “check out” or avoid something in my work, I can drive thirty minutes to the place I get my favorite chai latte from, get my fix and then drive thirty minutes back. Quite a mission for a chai latte but one I used to do all the time.

The problem isn’t that it’s bad for me because it’s not. It’s the tea latte kind and truly has no “unhealthy” additives. It’s not about that.

It’s about me using it as a crutch to get out of my busy day and avoiding doing stuff I didn’t want to do. I also don’t respond well to black tea caffeine and I often have sleepless nights when I have one too late in the evening.

Anddddd, on top of that, each chai latte was like $8. That shit adds up. So, I’m spending $8, plus gas money, disrupting my work day and can’t sleep because of it.

Enter the best Christmas present ever.

I am a hard person to get gifts for. This year my family asked me to put together a list of things I’d like, and I decided to add a milk steamer.

My sister loves spending time ensuring she’s getting something worth her money. So, she researched and decided to get me a “NESPRESSO Aeroccino 3 Milk Frother”.

Game changer.

I received the gift obviously on December 25th and without fail have used it at least once a day.

Oh, and I also haven’t purchased a chai latte since December 25th.

Anddddd, I also have finally satisfied my chocolate craving. So, I’m sleeping better because I’m not amped up on black tea caffeine, I’m saving money, I’m eating more superfoods and I’m more productive in my day.

Clearly, I’m obsessed. But, not in spending an hour in the car to get an $8 drink that keeps me up at night obsessing.

I promise you’ll be obsessed, too.

Here’s the recipe:

My Everyday Superfood Hot Chocolate Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup almond milk (you can use something else, I just recommend staying away from soy milk)
  • 1 tablespoon honey (I recommend raw unpasteurized or you can use maple syrup if vegan)
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon Vital Proteins’ Collagen Peptide powder
  • 1 teaspoon cacao powder

Directions:

  1. Put almond milk in the steamer to the max line (this may be less than a cup) and hold button down so it goes red.
  2. Once it’s done, take off the lid and add any additional ingredients. Make sure you put the coconut oil in first so it can melt and so that the machine doesn’t turn off.
  3. Put the lid back on and hold down the button until it goes blue.
  4. Pour into cup and enjoy!
  5. When you’re finished, take your finger around the inside of the cup to ensure you don’t miss the foamy goodness that the milk steamer creates. Mmmm….

Some important things to know about the recipe:

Make sure you’re purchasing cacao powder instead of cocoa powder. Cacao powder is raw chocolate in its most awesome form. It’s jam-packed with a buttload of nutrients that your body will thank you for consuming.

Collagen Peptides are an awesome thing to add to upgrade this drinks superfoodness. It helps with your hair, skin, nails and overall bone health. We alllll need some help in those areas. When it comes to collagen powder, be super selective with the brand you choose. I did a buttload of research and found the collagen from Vital Proteins has the highest quality.
