I used to live and breathe a healthy lifestyle, and my blog used to be filled with alllll of the different wellness tips and tricks.

But not now.

Now I eat cookies when I want cookies.

I drink smoothies when I want smoothies. I eat vegan cinnamon buns whenever the mood takes me.

I also view playing basketball or going for a walk as exercise. I’m no longer obsessing over different superfoods or ensuring I eat a certain amount every day or even working out a lot.

And you know what? I’m feeling so much better, all around. In fact, I’d say I’m the healthiest I’ve ever been.

You see, my idea of health has shifted dramatically and my motives for staying healthy have shifted too. Because it was never completely about wellness. It had to do with how I looked.

These days, I’m making everything as simple as possible.

Here are three simple ways that I’m taking care of myself these days:

1. I connect with myself and my body daily

I’m in constant conversation with myself so I know how I’m feeling, and what my body wants.

I do this through daily reflection and “plugging into myself.” Each morning I journal, focus on my breathing and check-in. I do the same at night.

This practice has allowed me to get in tune with what my emotions crave and what my body needs, so I can always give them what they want.

I’m able to be closer in touch with my emotions which allows me to express them more effectively. When it comes to my body, I’m learning to give it what it wants. There are some days where my body wants to do crunches, or sometimes it just wants to go for a walk.

If you’re unsure where to start, my recommendation is to get quiet and ask yourself how you’re doing. If you can, make time to do this daily. You can start with a simple pause throughout the day or have dedicated journaling time. Do whatever you can to connect.

2. I stay hydrated

This is obviously a complete no-brainer. But it’s really the one tip from the previous “Way of Gray” days that I keep on top of. I always make sure I stay hydrated!

(This may be too much information for some, but I just monitor the color of my pee to ensure I’m getting enough liquids. 😉)

Hopefully I don’t need to go into detail on why you should stay hydrated. We’re humans. We’re made up of water. We should make sure we’re consuming enough. And drinking enough water is a pretty easy way to stay healthy.

Yah, I know water isn’t the most exciting of drinks, especially when it’s plain. That’s why Hint has been my go-to lately. I still drink a butt load of water from the tap, but since it’s summer and everyone around me is drinking fancy cocktails, I wanted to change things up.

3. I get enough rest

Yup, rest is on my list of ways I’m taking care of myself.

It might not be the most exciting wellness tricks, but it’s super important. Because everyone is always so busy these days. Sometimes our bodies are up for it, and other times they’re not. It’s important that we honour these needs so we can go with the natural flow of our productivity and absolutely nail whatever we’re working on.

There are weeks where I absolutely crush my to-do list and take a billion steps forward with DiveThru. Then there are some weeks where all I want to do is retreat inward.

If I try to push through when my body is telling me to retreat, I only end up feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, and not creating much anyway! But if I recognize this and respect it, I stay connected with myself, recharge my batteries and give myself that “down time”, I know I’ll come back stronger.

So I make it a priority to have at least one day off a week from work, to-do lists and even my cell phone when possible. I know it’s an absolute privilege to do this, but it’s important to do.

I warned you that this list would be simple! But, that’s how I’m liking things these days. I may not be my “thinnest” and “fittest” self these days, but I am my healthiest self, both mentally and physically.

Isn’t that what this trip here on earth is really about?!
